PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

HAMLET PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Both of the performances went really well. We got great audience responses from both shows and I think that really helped boost the energy of some scenes, especially in the second show where we were all a lot more tired than the first one. I think I projected really well, especially in such a large space where there are audience on 3 sides. Hamlet was a character that I had worked on so hard and I think I got really deep into my characterisation during both performances. As a company, we all worked really hard together and even during the physical sequences, if anyone messed up or got something wrong, we covered them and made sure no one was left on their own. With the physical sequences, I feel like I never am 100% comfortable and therefore don't ever fully commit to the movement. I feel like this held me back sometimes during the physical sequences and I definitely could have done better. Some of the sequences required lifting which I did well.  At points, my articulation slipped and I stumbled on a couple of words.

As a cast, we managed to tell our story the way we wanted to tell it. I am happy with how I told my version of Hamlet. In my first scene, Hamlet talks to Polonius and pretends to be mad because Polonius is spying on him. In this scene, there were a few comedic moments that Callum and I worked hard on getting right. I think the way our character's personalities clashed was really engrossing and Callum really brought a great comedic edge to his version of Polonius.
In the second part of that scene, I think I nailed the back and forth speed between Hamlet and Laertes that was really needed for the scene. Hamlet has just found that Laertes is going behind his back and spying on him. Hamlet is quick witted, smart and sarcastic in this scene. I think there were some points where I could have nailed the comedy a bit better but overall, I am happy with my performance. In my final scene, Hamlet is contemplating killing Claudius. In this part of the play, a lot has happened to Hamlet that my version of the character didn't necessarily directly experience, but did experience in a third person view. I had to place myself into how the current Hamlet was feeling and then relate that to my own Hamlet, and think about they would react. In this scene, I got really deep into my character and was very emotionally involved. It really helped having Matt right in front of me, on his knees, quivering and whimpering. It really made me feel more powerful and helped me source the anger. I also had Jake adding some atmospheric percussion underneath my speech. This scene really showcases Hamlet's mental state and I think I did a pretty good job of showing it.

We received feedback from audience members:

- The multiple people as one character really worked well - I also enjoyed this concept because it was really refreshing to see how other people take on a character, and in turn, we all inspired each other to do different and new things with our characterisation.
- The show was less focused on the linear narrative and more on the psychological aspect - Our play was very much different the original Hamlet in the way it was ordered. It focused a lot on Hamlet's mental demise.
- The music was great - Using music all from a few artists really established a great atmosphere for our play. It was a very relevant to our play as all the artists had committed suicide and decided to end their own lives.
- The physical sequences were strong and every one contrasted each other
- The use of live music was effective because it gave a certain edge and I think the audience really engaged with it well and connected
- There was a lot of energy in the unity.

Overall, the performance went very well and I am so pleased with how we worked as a cast to tell the amazing story.
